Unfortunately I don’t know enough about how the French lived in the 19th century to comment intelligently. The most real people were very minor players and the major characters became more and more insufferable as the novel went on. An enthusiastic reader and independent thinker as a child, Balzac had trouble adapting himself to the teaching style of his grammar school.
There are very few books from a different era, no matter how famous and popular they were at the time, that read well today.

The scholar then goes on to say that Old Goriot is a masterpiece because it doesn’t expose that fault. I read a Signet Classics edition of this book. Sheed and Ward, I really want to try Balzac. Inanimate objects are imbued with character as well; the city of Paris, a backdrop for much of his writing, takes on many human qualities.

Due to his keen babz of fine detail and unfiltered representation of society, Balzac is regarded as one of the founders of realism in European literature.
I finished the thing with the duty of a schoolboy. Many of Balzac’s works have been made into films, and they continue to inspire other writers. His relationship with his family was often strained by financial and personal drama, and he babaa more than one friend over critical reviews.

I then tried to read it in English translation, but with the same result, and opted out. The plot is constructed for those soapboxes. It was better in French than in English, but the melodrama is overpowering either way.
A much-revised third naba was published in by Charpentier. Want to Read saving…. This is a shame. Is it necessary for a book to be dreadfully boring and over-melodramatic to be called a classic?

Set in Paris init follows the intertwined lives of three characters: At the start of the novel, Balzac declares in English: The characters are flat and fickle to the point of void. Even as he is dying in extreme poverty, at the end of the book, he sells his few remaining possessions to provide for his daughters so that they might look splendid at a ball.
