At first glance, the English translation of the courrisanes might seem somewhat of a misnomer. During the course of the story, Balzac’s clever pen reveals that there is very little difference to be found between the behavior of the elite of the French aristocracy and the desperate ruffians incarcerated in the prison. This novel is rich in characters from other stories of The Human Comedy, including the fascinating villain Jacques Collin aka Vautrin.

I’ll leave you to discover the rest, but the plot careers between splendwurs drawing rooms and boudoirs of the splendeuts of French society to the meanest cells of the Conciergerie, the dreaded French prison. As the title suggests the Harlot in the story experiences the vicissitudes of life with her days of wealth and luxury numbered and ultimately offset by misery. Oh yes, don’t forget the powerful social commentary that Balzac did so well.
I realize this is intended to portray a section eh society at that time, as part of The Human Comedy he was compiling, but it irritated me. The deception, corruption, and trickery, dea every level of society, are brilliantly displayed — often almost off-hand, in casual conversation because everyone expects nothing different.
He is one of the greatest of Balzac’s many memorable characters and ranks among the greats of world literature. Help us improve this article!

Balzac suffered from health problems throughout his life, possibly due to his intense writing schedule. He made me fall in love with French translations.
