Though I do like him when he’s so puppy eyed with the h and was really quite confused for most of the book, making him seem less abrasive and tough that you will want to shout at him, I actually found what he’s done pretty unforgivable yes I’m quite a tough cookie I guess.

Jack believed Gervaise, divorced her, and left England for five years. To save themselves and the friends who have given them sanctuary, they must stand against their enemies, even as they both keep their secrets. This review is not spoiler free. Jack’s naivete didn’t say much for his character dteyer I kept thinking And she finds Jack on the field of battle, dressed in a French uniform and convinced they are still wed.

I guess that has to be there to make the H “redeem” himself at least, but I wish there’s another way to do it. You would be alone and have no one to call for help.

Barely a Lady (Drake’s Rakes, #1) by Eileen Dreyer

There’s a silly line about how she had faith in him, so he didn’t really need to explain. Added by 1 of our members. I was on the edge of my seat more than once, and I felt every heartbreak, every trauma, every unimaginable horror that the heroine felt while reading.

One scene actually was written so beautifully and with so much dignity that I had tears in my eyes when I read it. I admit to some interest in reading this book after reading very polar reviews, it seemed to be a love it or leave it type of book.

If you love this plotline and feel you simply must add to your collection, go for it. Thanks for telling us about the problem.

Full review to come. I liked the style of the book, with all the past secrets being revealed slowly throughout the book. At least the hero turns his back on his awful family and makes promises to the heroine we ddreyer hope he keeps. How could she trust him again after what he did to her?

The author was new to me and I haven’t read a historical romance in a while. Why do I have to wait for August for it?? This book was provided for review by Hachette. The story would not have worked either if the h had been drawn as a weak push over, who too easily forgave the very reprehensible behaviour of the H. There were parts I enjoyed, but all in all the husband found his forgiveness but because we didn’t get to actually see Jack redeem himself for all the misery he put Olivia through, their happily ever after fell a little xreyer for me.

Readers will love the well-rounded characters and suspenseful plot, and will cheer on intelligent, resourceful Olivia and Lady Kate as they take on disparaging men, backstabbing relatives, and stealthy assassins in their quest to protect Jack and create their own happiness in barley midst of war.

The narration was unevenly paced. And a cousin bent on having all that Jack owned even Olivia herself?

Barely a Lady by Eileen Dreyer – FictionDB

The hero is the quintessential gold Mixed review. It does take time for her to believe his ‘newly re-found’ devotion, and if it will last. Description Olivia Grace has secrets that could destroy her.

Talk about an emotional train wreck. While he’s away in the 5 years, he sleeps with a spy. By the time he finally grows a set, figures out what is going on, and gives the heroine her well-owed apology, the book is very nearly done. It has a definite Othello theme running through the plot, although this isn’t so pronounced that you keep thinking of Shakespeare all the way through.

To go through so much and still want the person who tore her soul out was difficult for me to understand still is but her character was so well written that I just went with it.

The battlefield was depicted extraordinarily well to the point where the destruction and despair of the aftermath nearly leaks from the page. The book is well written, and the fact that it resembles many, many others on the shelves means this style of book is popular. He is the man from her past, although he seems more serious, more capable and darker.

Now five years later, Olivia is living out a life as a companion on the outskirts of society that shuns her. Once I started, I couldn’t put it down. The main issue I had with Barely A Lady had to do with the storyline. To go through so much and still want the person who tore her soul out was difficult for me to understand still is but h Wow. I also thought how Lady Kate made such fast friends with Olivia at a ball where Olivia was a governess and hanging with the servants to be completely unrealistic.

This includes a series of lies by a villain to set up the It is a rare author who can write engagingly about betrayal, separation or infidelity but to tell a wonderful story with all these very challenging themes is a tremendous accomplishment. To aid Jack’s recovery, Olivia must bury her own anguish and anger over their divorce and pretend to still be his loving, passionate wife.

And his kisses are so passionate they can make her forget that? I cheered for Olivia and loved her for her courage! The doctor tells Olivia and others they must not tell Jack anything about his past because it will either give him brain fever or kill him. Olivia has lived her life on the run, scared of the demons that not only ruined her life, but still can destroy her easily. I am sad to say that we have very different tastes.
