Click here to upload more images optional. One description that really stuck with me was when the Rabbi noticed the jacket sleeves were tucked in to the pocket of the suit next to it. She’s dead and doesn’t get to portray herself as the other characters do. It is a darkly humorous book, but one that does not pull punches.

This is the second book in my personal determination to read the Booker Prize winners in order. The Mookse and th Intwo young Americans meet in Verdun, the city jember France where one of the most devastating battles of the war was waged. There were better written books on the shortlist and more enjoyable ones, but Bernice Rubens is tackling the serious issue of mental health and writing a compulsive family drama.
When word of the gruesome new discovery breaks, she is in the midst of arranging a weekend of birthday celebrations for a wealthy Englishman’s wife. The novel moves from intense emotion to humour and pathos to the frightening realisation that those who are eected by the insane quickly become insane themselves. Some Yiddish words are used throughout the narrative which require the reader to do some research on their meanings and cultural connotations.
The story is a merger of his family life and his experiences at a mental institution.
Not, in the end, one of my favorite Bookers, but certainly a great one. It tells the story of an immigrant Rabbi who comes to the East End of London, marries his first love and produces a dysfunctional family unit, in which all of its members are restricted and ultimately retarded by the rituals and expectations of Judaism. Writing about her marriage must have had a cathartic effect, for Bernice Rubens went on to produce her Booker Prize-winning The Elected Member.

What a beautifully written book with a tragi-comic perspective about a Jewish family whose son, Norman, has been committed to a mental hospital after repeated bouts with drug abuse. His father, a Rabbi, makes the difficult decision to have Norman committed for treatment.
Are the Zwecks really bad people? Revealing the past incidents which contributed to the situation from time to time, the whole story is n The Elected Member is a short and powerful novel. This is slected depressing story of a pretty messed up family, but the writing is so good that it is easy to read past what is actually happening and enjoy crawling through the wreckage.
This Booker Prize winner is a strange little novel, maybe you have to be Jewish to really engage with it. Bernice Rubens was born in Wales and began writing electes her middle thirties when the kids went to school.
