As I a writer myself, I am always looking for new books to read, and my first choice is always African ahrare. My copy is for sale. Brian Chikwava’s unnamed asylum-seeking narrator arrives in Harare North with nothing to his name but a survivor’s instinct. It gave a good insight into the struggles of finding ‘graft’ and living hand to mouth.
His is a parasitical existence, first in the house of his cousin and his wife, neither of whom wants him there. The Nigerians do it a lot, but mostly in the dialogue.
He’s unlikeable, which in and off itself isn’t a problem, there are plenty of unlikeable protagonists, but that Chikwava doesn’t give him enough emotional depth that I felt interested hcikwava how his story would play out.

It is clever, beautifully crafted and very, very funny. So strong start, then sort of fizzled out. He brought everything out in the open, exposing the hardships of settling in a new environment, the difficulties of finding decent jobs, proper accommodation, food and just being a normal human being in a foreign land.
