What I mean is that there is something so close to convention in its treatment of its dark subject, lean, mean writing, and shocking moments poised to cause shock and discomfort that it seems better suited to those who aren’t quite as used to the particular style born out by “issue theatre” not inherently a bad thing, and, certainly, Harrower comes up with an addictive and almost irresistible play to chew on.

This play is creepy and scary and all too real. Now, years later, she’s found him again. Harrower doesn’t take a stance on anything. Fragments and almost-thoughts linked together to create this unsettling cadence. She got worried and left to find him, which led to both of them frantically searching for one another and raising suspicions within the small coastal town where they were staying. The writing style executed on paper reminds me almost of a bird chirping. The young women in my class are all fighting it out to play the female lead part – not necessarily because of me but, rather, because the female lead is that good!
For a play about such a dark, horrible subject, it’s also a play that can’t make up its own mind – or didn’t seem to have one in the first place. The play ends without a clear victory or loss for either of them. It is not a subject matter that most people would find good for the stage or even for discussion but having been there and seen it I found I had to have it.
Sometimes, this is a hzrrower that seems almost to be using all its edgy, dark, and twisted – but beautiful – writing, to sadly go for much more obvious and less daring targets than may first appear. This one is interesting and also very tricky. Fifteen years ago Una and Ray had a relationship.

I bought this for an acting class assignment. As the play continues, she begins to exhibit a strong dissociative quality, showing the confusion she still experiences, the crossed wires of pain and desire.
To be honest the traverse version, being the first one we saw, was most harrowing. Or perhaps I should rephrase that. There’s no vocal, but the song—Paul McCartney’s “Blackbird,” from the Beatles’ White Album— is instantly recognizable, and its words float in your head: Una was very young, under age at the time and as aforementioned, it would be easy to dismiss this as an abuse.

Shocking, gut renching, amazing, heartstopping, those are some of the words I can think of to tell you what Blwckbird felt while there in the nineth row. Though, in the end, I’d recommend it to harroewr how David tackled this deeply taboo subject matter and balances the subject matter with care. Una has endured a lifetime of being “talked about, pointed at, stared at,” while Ray has done his time, changed his name, moved to a new city, and rebuilt his life. Exploring the blurry line between passion and perversion, love and abuse, Blackbird suggests that intimate relationships between adults and minors are taboo not because they’re abnormal but because they’re all too natural.
