In the s and s, several of Turkey’s radical left movements concentrated their efforts at finding grassroots support especially on Dersim, in part because of the geography of the region, in part also because of the reputation dersimm its people for independent-mindedness.

One reason why they opted for this insecure region rather than western Turkey was probably that they did not wish to loose their animals, which constituted their major source of livelihood. The statistics presented in this report prove otherwise.

Forced evictions of villagers began on a large scale in Dersim region, modern day Tunceli Province. Having crossed an international border, they legally became refugees, and therefore a little more conspicuous than the others who had been forced to leave their villages.
In spite of these restrictions on the flow of information, and the self-censorship practised by most of the Turkish press, it is clear that forced evictions have been adopted as a deliberate policy at the highest political level.
Whereas the PKK in was estimated to have four to five hundred armed men active inside Turkey’s borders, the estimate for was several tens of thousands, moving relatively freely through the mountains and communicating with their base camps and central command by radio. One factor that has made it difficult to gather systematic information on these village evacuations is that the people from any one village have not usually stayed together but have in most cases immediately dispersed.
