Its depiction of the Global Teen generation is similar to the depiction of Generation X in the previous novel, yet it suffers from comparison to Generation X. The “Shampoo” of the title refers to his obsession with different hair products, though that’s a little bit of an affectation – not just for Tyler but for the whole book. His American teens interrailing are more believable than Franzen’s character in a gangster Lithuania in “The Corrections”, and indeed, the great thing about Coupland’s book is how well he writes about the young people who are his protagonists. He drifts all over CA with a French girlfriend, even meets up with his hippie burned out dad and saves his hippie mom from domestic violence.
It perfectly captured the mood and aura of the early 90s. I tried to read Generation X when I was 13 or so and, frankly, I just didn’t get it. I am most impressed with his ability to make them human. His time in Los Angeles is wrought with strife. I still remember Pierre Trudeau.

It is a thematic followup to Coupland’s first novel, Generation X: Aug 28, Alison Smith rated it liked it. Aspirar a la vida del hombre moderno: Tyler is typical of Coupland’s bright laconic narrators, an innocent abroad in the world on the cusp of life changing.
Tyler feels himself become more drawn to Stephanie than Anna-Louise. Jul 30, Anders Tempelman rated it it was ok. The secret is Stephanie, a rich French girl who took him in and became his girlfriend for those last weeks in Paris, and was everything that Anne-Louise wasn’t, uncaring, materialistic, world-weary.
Now, and I want to make this clear, if I’m criticizing Coupland for recycling themes, settings, and characters, he gets a slap on the wrist at most.
