I think he missed a great opportunity to both connect people into the story and explore some cool summre about the values of modern culture, and the stories we tell ourselves now- American Gods style, but better.
My boyfriend and I had just gone through what would be the first of many breakups. Along with shmmer lyrical language, one of the foremost of Kay’s gifts, in my opinion, is his characterisation. And if that doesn’t convince you enough, I already bought the next book and have begun reading it at the time of writing this review.
The dialogue is also a bit clunky at times. Each of the lives of the Toronto students are a thread woven into the tapestry of the Weaver, and their paths intersect and part ways, forming the shape of an intricate and interconnected narrative.
I initially cringed at the thought of modern day people bringing their modern day ideals and airs into a swords-and-sorcery age.
I read it more then 10 times the past 20 years. They know immediately that it is special.

That’s how most magical journey’s start anyway isn’t it? Of course, The Summer Tree is Kay’s first novel, and there are one or two rough edges here and there. Right off the bat, I summeer that this was taking an old trick that so much Fantasy and much SF seems almost “Required”, skmmer from the late seventies and eighties.
A good, solid read. The 5 main characters are all interesting and well introduced. My initial impression was that everyone except for Dave was failing to express the scepticism that one should expect from real citizens of the late twentieth century. Then you can show me the epic battle and expect me to care about everyone involved.
But do yourself a favour, and don’t skip it. An ancient evil, Rakoth Maugrim, the Unraveller, stirs and must be defeated again even though the age of heroes has long gone by. And this trilogy, and The Summer Treeis that.

It seemed for a while that for every 3 books on the fantasy shelves Quotes from The Summer Tree. Kay plays and works his magic in Tolkien’s idealistic framework. His gods are sumker more touchable, and more concerned with the individual fates of mortal men, and so less distant and thus less awe-inspiring. About Guy Gavriel Kay. Kay takes touchstones from mythology and weaves them together in a haunting opener to this trilogy about the first world and the impact five people from our own world have on it, in the midst of an epic struggle between good and evil. The initial transition from Toronto to Fionavar is a bit rough.

I can’t imagine Kay’s characters speaking in any other way. He told me to avoid the trilogy, though, because he knew I would hate it. A time of celebration of the soul, despite not being tbe if it will live up to the expectations at the end. The dialogue was functional. And everything is built on a foundation of love, a theme that runs through virtually all of Kay’s writing.
Listen to something that moves you while you read it, something that has its roots in loss and sacrifice but also in love, and I suspect it’ll be seared into your memory more than a decade from now as well. Reading should be a pleasure and not a labor for which Hercules would pat you on the back in admiration.

Now, all that being said, the book is pretty well written and I have no doubt that should GGK run across this review or one like it, he’d say something like “ya Fionavar is the land where citizens of all the other universes can fulfill their true destinies, so the Torontonians must have been apprehending the significance of Fionavar intuitively, even in the early chapters.
One fact I did not like fionavvar the way that all three male characters were presented in Fionavar with a stream of beautiful ladies to take off to bed. It piqued my curiosity. View all 10 comments.
