The recording also comes with a 25 page booklet which includes the sonnets themselves, a brief history of Fungi from Yuggoth, footnotes on select poems and an introduction by Lovecraftian author, W.

A faint, veiled sign of continuities That outward eyes can never quite descry; Of locked dimensions harbouring years gone by, And out of reach except for hidden keys. Fungi from Yuggoth and Other Poems by H.P. Lovecraft

I came away from this book convinced that HPL may have been a better poet than a prose writer. When considering the question of who fungo the most influential author of weird fiction in the 20th century, HP Lovecraft is a strong contender for the title.

In addition to The Whisperer in Darknessthe cycle references other works by Lovecraft and introduces a rrom of ideas that he would expand upon in later works. Much has been written about Lovecraft’s evocation of horror, but less about the sense of awe in his work, the reverence in the presence of the godlike, totally inhuman entities he writes about.

Several of these sonnets brought to mind ideas from the stories like “The Well” has I consciously or unconsciously put off reading this mostly because I prefer prose to poetry I still dobut I should have read this sooner. The line between fear and wonder in these poems is membranously thin. The rotting, ygugoth houses leered at me From where they leaned, drunk and half-animate, As edging through the filth I passed the gate To the black courtyard where the man would be. The Familiars John Whateley lived about a mile from town, Up where the hills began to huddle thick; We never thought his wits were very quick, Seeing the way he let yuvgoth farm run down. They search the sea for form of their old shore— For funyi tall city, white and turreted— But only empty waters stretch ahead, So that at last they turn away once more.

Personally I have always favoured the interpretation that after the opening trilogy the rest of the cycle is a kaleidoscope of visions from beyond conjured by the cobwebbed tome. Harbour Whistles Over old roofs and past decaying spires The harbour whistles chant all through the night; Throats from strange ports, and beaches far and white, And fabulous oceans, ranged in motley choirs.

And although his early stories clearly show the influence of Poe and another of his favourites Lord Dunsanyhe soon develops his own distinctive voice and rungi creations. And another key reason why his poetic works have never garnered a huge audience is the fact that much of his poetry has little to do with the strange and ffrom. Interesting as an exercise, and worth a listen, but not as enduring as some of his other verses.

Mad, soundless revels of the dragging dead— And not a corpse had either hands or head! I have listened to this outstanding recording numerous times — it haunts my torturous dreams It was the same—an herbage rank and wild Clings round an altar whose carved sign invokes That Nameless One to whom a thousand smokes Rose, aeons gone, from unclean towers up-piled. Fungi from Yuggoth represents a marked departure from the mannered poems Lovecraft had been writing yuggorh to this point.

Half to the sky those steep sides loomed upspread, Rank-grassed, and cluttered by a crumbling flight Of lava stairs that scaled the fear-topped height In steps too vast for any human tread. With that out of the way Although reissued on CD some years later, sadly this work is now out of print, but Fedogan and Bremer are planning a new release very soon, and at last I shall be able to retire my oft played and now wobbly sounding cassette!

There were vast pavements and foundation-walls, And crumbling slabs and uyggoth, carved to shew Fantastic beings of some long ago Past anything the fungl of man recalls. This may have been the first time that the sequence was published in its corrected text. Great terraced gardens where bright blossoms blow, And lines of mangoes luscious to the taste, And temple-groves with branches interlaced Over yuuggoth paths—all these their vague dreams shew.

Lovecraft Encyclopedia Howard Phillips Lovecraft: It provides a distilled version of HPL I think. While it may be argued the cycle was an attempt to give these unused ideas some form of creative expression, I find it difficult to believe that Lovecraft would have no other artistic purpose in mind other than releasing some imaginative pressure.
