Everyone seems to have their own theory on this, but i don’t find any to be redeeming of this shocking twist which makes light of severe disability. Ruth, the oldest, is dumb and mute and taken care of by Iris, the younger, smarter sister, who shows artistic promise but is considered plain at best and will never be a beauty.
Iris, in this story kept degrading herself because of her plainness, in complete oblivion of her talent, her cleverness. These are great characters that feel alive.
