I simply hated The Glass Bead Game, all fifteen million pages of it. It seems reasonable to assume that the monologues express the author’s views, since the opposing views are often expressed more simply and concisely, and then promptly refuted by another character’s lengthy discourse.

I endured and hoped that when the real book got going I would find myself on dry land, ready to jog. The central character is, so we are repeatedly told, this overwhelmingly charismatic leader, but we’re only told this, it never comes out in Hesse’s portrait of him.

Don’t get me wrong, I can see the book’s well written, it’s just so sickly sweet over the general perfection of Knecht that I can feel myself slipping into a diabetic coma as we speak. If someone likes this kind of story telling, I accept it, but it was far too much for me.

When one of the players needed to learn Chinese characters to play, one realised the premise that any one individual could play alone was preposterous; and that learning and human knowledge would be being constantly added to the game were ignored too.

In the end I only finished it out of sheer stubbornness. The stories are presented as exercises by Knecht imagining his life had he been born in another time and place.

One of my indictments of this book comes ironically, from the author’s own words: It has a plot and sub-plots, if possible. Missing are the vivid portrayals and homoerotic tensions that propelled his novels beyond Platonic dialogues and into personal journeys. After all the praise Herman stuck through a boring start, through a dull middle and all the way to the lacklustre end of this book.

The funniest thing about it was that I read on Wikipedia that the book was supposed to take place in the 25th century. Knecht, too, comes to see Castalia as a kind of ivory tower, an ethereal and protected community, devoted to pure intellectual pursuits but oblivious to the problems posed by life outside its borders. Oh, and it’s much longer herrmann The Glass Bead game is, yet you can see I have no complaints at all!
