The Best Books of Memere would be happy knowing that she brought together not only a plethora of cousins and friends I might otherwise have never met, but also the four Kontis siblings: This is the first Woodcutter’s Sister’s book I have read and it will not be my last. But with a curse to break, an errant ocean, and other demands everywhere, there is no guarantee that Tristan and Friday will ever make it to that shared future in Dearest by Alethea Kontis.

I think Alethea Kontis has magic herself. I was even welcome to go on at length this time. For me, this book was much slower to hook me, but once it got going it was good fun. Although this is the second in a series, it could also make a fine standalone book, even though I strongly suggest reading the first, not only to understand some things they mention in Hero but also because Enchanted is equally as amazing as Hero.

Even if the explanation was something like, “because the Prophecy said so” there is no prophecy in this book, but the use of one would have workedor something like that, I would have been a little more content. Overall I just couldn’t shake the feeling that the author had about 47 concepts that she really loved and instead of picking a few and making it work, she mashed them all together like a kitchen sink sundae. There are a few new elements to the world that I don’t remember from the first one, and this book ended with the story still in play not a cliff hanger which I’m not sure I really like.

Would I Recommend It: I enjoyed her discussions with the orphans John, Wendy and Michael. There’s more to come in this series so I’m sure I’ll read through all of them again in the future. I’m sure it took much more than a simple poof to write Hero, but that’s how it seems. If you enjoy adventurous fairytale mash-ups, you’ll want to start reading this series now!

It was all spread out good and evenly across the book, not so that it was action after action but there was other things in between it.

A Million More Pages: Enchanted finaled in only one of them. Allethea, with not having read the other books, Enchanted and Hero, I have not gotten to know the other sisters too well besides Friday who is the main one in this book.

This tells the story of Saturday, the rough and tumble sister of the seven sisters. But he turns out to be under a spell that only Saturday can break and that will only happen when this seemingly normal girl digs deep enough to find her own hidden talents. I liked Enchanted well enough, but never read Hero. Now Peregrine is a character to my liking. I think I liked Sunday more, but Saturday was pretty tough!

It’s like Kontis picked out every character that I didn’t give two kongis about, and decided to base her books around them. Quinn—who also has a permanent art installation on my fridge—has lately been into collage work.
