Although I loved the story, it was boring at some points with some long descriptions The entire neighbourhood pretended not to have heard. Men have honour, women have shame. I could not put this book eliv. In her book about honor killings, Rana Husseini relates her encounters with the men in the families who sanctioned the killings rlif their female relatives or those men who killed the women.

In the mornings we went on with our lives as usual. Shafak blends Western and Eastern traditions of storytelling, bringing out the myriad stories of women, minorities, immigrants, subcultures, youth and global souls.
Some might argue that the apparent anti-realistic feel of such episodes is a deliberate effort on the part of the writer and supposed to be magical realism. When a dream signals that her twin is in danger, Jamila has no trouble finding the people who can get her to London without proper documentation. It’s a topic that will forever anger and sadden me.

The story is about a Turkish family in London. Their youngest son Yunus is named after the prophet who was swallowed by a bby according to Islamic beliefs.
However Shafak also has something of Amin Malouf in that she writes about cultural identities. Adem, the father, falls in love with an exotic dancer. Elif Shafak is an unflinching writer.

It was his first lesson in the complexity of love. One had to assume that his father had told him ugly stories about his own mother, rather poisoning him toward women, but we know that he was loathe do so.
