Introduction Edith Hope is an astute, watchful Englishwoman approaching middle age, a writer of romance novels who secretly believes in the happy endings they offer. In English fiction there’s always a slight sneer somewhere in the background. And one doesn’t know how intelligent the interrogator would be.
But her marriage is a desperately unhappy one. Edith knows there is something wrong with this argument, but she does not dispute it with him. Skinner analyzes the allusions in Hotel du Lac to the world of popular romance. And he had an integrity in his work that was unmistakable.

He wants companionship, without demands. Such women strike me as dishonorable. Fiction, the time-honoured resource of the ill-at-ease, would have to come to her aid, but the choice of a book presented some difficulties, since when she was writing she could only read something she had read before, and in her exhausted state, a febrile agitation, invisible to the naked eye, tended to distance even the very familiar. What makes Hotel du Lac stand out from its predecessors is the incorporation of so many of their features in one text.
This book cut WAY too close to the bone for me. Pusey has had a heart attackonly to find that the scream was uttered by Jennifer at the sight of a spider. Iris Pusey is a wealthy widow from London who regularly comes to the Hotel du Lac with her daughter Jennifer for the sole purpose of going on shopping expeditions for luxury items, such as fine clothes and jewelry. How does this manifest itself in the text?
It is only love, or the hope of it, that keeps her feeling fully alive. There is something almost heroic in her droll resistance to any glimmer of hope.
