The section closes in chapter twelve by taking into consideration who the real Jesus could have been if such a man did in fact exist, and makes a strong case that the only plausible answer is that he was just another one of the many failed apocalyptic prophets common in that time and place.
Christianity as the most wonderful story and biggest threat John seems to intimate that the making a world view decision based on which is the most personally appealing story is a bad one, but I think he lacks specificity here.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed reading The Christian Delusion. Section five, and indeed the book, johb up with chapter fifteen which thoroughly rebuts any notion that Christianity was responsible for scientific growth and modern scientific development. Tobin’s arguments on problems with the Bible is excellent chapter 6.
This is all well-documented by Eller in a small amount of space. Book ratings by Goodreads. More directly, theists can and do drag along quite a bit of nonsense that they demand non-theists to take seriously.
