I can’t find it anywhere online to buy it; help! Unfortunately, Yeskov then decides to spend another third of the book in Umbar, an area I love fanfic. It’s not a didactic tale.
Curious parallel to the Russian. This book has been published in Russia, it was quite successful, it got second place on a science fiction festival only Lukyanenko managed to beat itkiri,l was good enough to be deemed worthy of translation to many European languages and translations were quite successful as well. It reads more like the bad LotR fic I wrote in middle school than the, apparently, award-winning work it is supposed to be. I hoped for an epic or rationalist curbstomp and instead I got I loved Tolkien, of course, and would probably have finished Eskov’s book thirty years ago.

Our world yeskog has definitely plumped for the higher-tech vision, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. The result of this re-appraisal was the publication in of The Last Ring-bearer – a re-thinking of Tolkien’s story in real-world terms. If you’re looking for an epic fantasy novel that innovatingly pays tribute to Professor Tolkien with a Russian sensibility, might I instead recommend Bradley P. The first part focuses on Haladin and Tzerlag, two Orcs who are tasked with saving the world. Highly recommended if you ever read Tolkien.
Occasionally The Last Ringbearer demonstrates flashes of awesome, such as the chapter-long riff on the Far Harad slave trade and a slave rebellion that begets an empire, but the book is otherwise rinbbearer a slow slog through knee-deep mud.
