Shaping behavior was not introduced until most of the way through the book, and could have been used instead of the instruction to “bang your dog on his nose” for trying an unwanted behavior before the dog has figured out what it is you want him to do!
An anxious dog or a terrier would give up on training altogether While the ideas for tricks were fun, the training technique often used unnecessary punishment during training, and used a lot of luring and physically pushing the dog into position. An anxious dog or a terrier would give up on training altogether with these techniques–who wants to play a game where you have to guess but you get smacked for guessing wrong?!? Kyra also has bought into a lot of the dominance theory baloney and insists that you do things like make the dog lose when you play tug together.
She also doesn’t chain behaviors in the most efficient order, and generally is out of date as far as her techniques go. There are a lot more fun and confidence-building methods to become proficient at all these tricks–so take the training instructions with a grain of salt, but you can certainly take the trick ideas from the book and find your own way to reach the goals with your dog as a partner.

I have several problems with the training ideas. First of all, don’t use a cue until your dog is doing it properly. Don’t encourage the dog to do the trick for the first time with the cue.

You’ll either teach them early on that the cue doesn’t mean anything or that the cue means to do it with the mistakes you had in practice. Also, I would have liked to see clickers encouraged more.
Clickers are especially helpful with teaching tricks or things that don’t come naturally to the dog. And some of the ideas don’t quite work.
For instance I tried the suggestions for “bow”. I’ve had more luck shaping that cue. So, I’d say it’s a worthwhile book for expanding your imagination on tricks but you might need to draft your own way of training them. Still looking for a great trick book. Easy for pup My dog took to these easily!

The most important part of this book is the very first section that stresses being consistent with your dog. The photos are helpful but I was sometimes confused in the text as to when the author inserts the verbal or visual cues to many of the tricks.
