I say that as a beginner myself. It’s a must have. My goal in reading books like this is to incorporate into my subconscious as many master game patterns as possible: Logical Chess was my first chess book, which accounts for my familiarity with it, and fondness for it. That doesn’t mean that that kind of advice doesn’t serve a useful purpose by giving newcomers to the game some first, rough guidelines to start learning from.

Chernev’s books have great instruction, and are very easy to read, while Nunn’s books can be too difficult for the average player. Makes ample use of quotations from other chess legends to corroborate the points that he is making.
But I don’t believe this should cause you to read Chernev’s book with caution at least no more caution or skepticism than one should have when reading anythingand certainly not cgernev paranoia.

Considering that the books is written for Beginners it would have been helpful to at least outline the path or to choose a completely different game. If you haven’t got a chess book, then I can think of no better way to start a collection than this one.

May 10, Alan Tomkins-Raney rated it really liked it. OTOH he does hammer home some good points for beginners. Why not just read Nunn, because Chernev is a good read and easy to understand and implement it’s a good place to start as either a chess student, or as a primer used by a chess teacher.

Above all others I’d recommend this to people who have a bit of chess interest but think reading a book will be too hard. Probably the greatest chess teacher.
