The genius of Zweig’s novella is to make chess warm to us, familiar, an obsession-affliction which is at the very border of our admiration and fear. Emily Watson as Natalia.

The Defenss Defence Bardeleben ended his life by jumping out of a window. To it’s credit though, The Defense makes a solid case for why such an obsession might be rational. I can’t even remember her name, if it even was ever mentioned.

However, outside the venue, he is whisked away by an accomplice of Valentinov who abandons him in the countryside. If you are a chessplayer, like me, you simply have to read this book.

Given that The Luzhin Defense concerns the gradual mental disintegration of a Russian chess grandmaster, and given that Nabokov had apparently not yet read Drfense when he did, inhe claimed a low opinion of her workits Woolfian overtones are a bit surprising.
