The genius of Zweig’s novella is to make chess warm to us, familiar, an obsession-affliction which is at the very border of our admiration and fear. Emily Watson as Natalia.
The sequence is as follows, Lhzhin has just played his rook to e8 check although it is not clear if this was a capture or not.
Basically, the plot deals with the story of a genius, whose perception of life entwines with chess strategy. It is easy to empathise with the others, however apart they may be from our own lives.

The Defenss Defence Bardeleben ended his life by jumping out of a window. To it’s credit though, The Defense makes a solid case for why such an obsession might be rational. I can’t even remember her name, if it even was ever mentioned.
However, outside the venue, he is whisked away by an accomplice of Valentinov who abandons him in the countryside. If you are a chessplayer, like me, you simply have to read this book.
He survives, but the doctors opine that further chess might be fatal to him. Vladimir Nabokov and Michael Scammell. Central questions of the latter half of the book, after Luzhin has been denied chess and attempts to reestablish some version of himself outside the game, are what happens when “salvation” becomes “damnation” when the thing that bestowed value on one’s life threatens to wipe out all meaning from that lifeand whether Augustine was right about the irreversibility of a conversion.
But before they can get in, the troubled chess grandmaster throws himself out of his bedroom window and dies. He locks himself in the bathroom his wife and several dinner guests banging on the door.

The Luzhin Defense
Given that The Luzhin Defense concerns the gradual mental disintegration of a Russian chess grandmaster, and given that Nabokov had apparently not yet read Drfense when he did, inhe claimed a low opinion of her workits Woolfian overtones are a bit surprising. I read the last three pages of this novel standing up.

Don’t have an account? Nabokov’s Luzhin is supposed to be short and fat, and his wife not that attractive. Without warning he gives away all of the major turns in the book then casually reveals the ending to top it off.
