The novel follows the fortunes of Cathy Scarlet and her college friend, Tom Feather, who set up a catering business together the ‘Scarlet Feather’ of the title. Scarlet Feather is not the first or last of her books that I read, nor is it really her best. Cathy’s mother Lizzie was Neil’s mother’s housekeeper which adds to the strain and complication of Cathy’s relationship with her mother-in-law who I mostly wanted to smack every time she made an appearance.
As with her other books, Scarlet Feather includes lots of characters who all play a role of some sort in the story of Tom, Cathy and their company, whether good or bad or sometimes both. Maeve Binchy is a talented writer who can create many characters and make you care about each one, bad or good.
It was simply about their challenges and rewards in the business and basically about their everyday lives. Binchy’s characters are her real strength, because they always sfarlet like friends. Will scalet be able to follow their dreams? This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. Each chapter covers a month in the year, but is divided into short vignettes jumping from character to character and scene to scene.
I wouldn’t NOT recommend it But over the course of the novel, they do grow and mature.

After the set up it began to follow Cathy and Tom starting up their catering business and taking on jobs Preview — Scarlet Feather by Maeve Binchy.
The two are close, but not romantically involved – Cathy is married to Neil Mitchell, the son of the wealthy household where her mother Lizzie used to scrub floors, and Tom is in a relationship with beautiful Marcella, who dreams of being a model. Some of her later novels, such as Evening Classtake place in more modern times. Binchys novel in the order in which they were published might really pay off, because she again mentioned characters that appeared in other novels and that would have been exiting, if I had read the books in which they are the main characters.
It has been a long time since I dug into a Binchy novel and although I have had a copy of Scarlet Feather sitting on my bookshelves, I had not gotten around to reading it.
Can’t help getting involved and hoping that the protagonists survive and thrive in the turmoil. When they were struggling financially, Light a Penny Candle was published, which made her an overnight success.
It touches the lives of just about everyone in town and has people from owners, to customers, to children and abuse recovery. Sep 24, Ramona Lazar rated it really liked it. But the rest seemed very superficial, because the characters were living superficial lives. She writes these intricate stories that involve a lot mzeve characters and several story lines Well, Binchy does such a great job telling her story and developing her characters, no need for the index card.
The book is written in a style that supports the ensemble cast. I forgot that I finished this book. There is plenty going on, as this novel follows their lives for one year. Muttie, Maud and Simon are the characters that stood out the most to me.
Bimchy think it’s the twins, Simon and Maude, and the way they interact with the other characters to bring out a variety of social and family issues that fascinated me.
I was not disappointed at all, in fact this is my favourite Binchy book so far. Lots of funny moments, but quite a bit of the darker side of life too. I rooted for Tom and Cathy and it further confirmed marve decision to never become a caterer–way too much work maeeve angst involved–even without all the family and life drama! Cathy and Tom, the main characters are clueless, stupid and completely lack the ability to stand up for themselves. Overall, I found this a little slow and disjointed to get into but by halfway it had started to coalesce and I actually enjoyed it so much I read the second half of the book in a much quicker time three days, compared to 2 weeks!
Overall, I enjoyed this book and was left thinking about the featner for ages afterwards. Some people might have found all the stories about Tom and Cathy’s catering jobs boring, but I really binnchy reading about them, seeing how their company had successes I have read three Maeve Binchy books so far – Tara Road, Quentin’s, and Scarlet Feather.

The beginning of the ffeather was slow because there were so many story lines to set up With Hannah unwilling to allow the children to stay with her and her husband, they are unofficially adopted by Cathy’s parents, Lizzie and Muttie, who live in a far less affluent part of town, but show the children real love meave the first time. This is one of many Maeve Binchy books that I have read. You can help Wikipedia by expanding it. I felt some of the others were resolved too quickly or too easily Is this the only book featuring these caterers?
